Why Neighbor Day, On a Sunday in May?
The month of May, A Sunday, and the weekend before Memorial Day Weekend picked for Neighbor Day for many reasons: In April of '93 a tragedy between two teens here in Westerly, RI where one lost his life and the other his freedom was our first encounter with a hate crime in this protected Community.
We as a Community opened our eyes to the needs of our youth and newcomers to a new town, our town.
Citizens saw from all the turmoil around us (the world) that we need something for all of us to commit to and pass on.
With technology, we in the 21st Century do not even know our next door Neighbor. Thus, a day for each and every one of us to remember to celebrate life and love for each other, made sense.
This celebration, Neighbor Day, should be our day, our way, each and every day however; we take Love for granted. Neighbor Day is an excuse to celebrate life and love for each other, why not?
Why May? It is a month for new beginnings and new life for the earth opens up and flowers bloom. It is a month that we stopped to consider our Neighbor (tragedy) and remember our dead on Memorial Day.
Therefore, you can understand why the Sunday before Memorial Day weekend would be proper time to remember all of us, the living (NEIGHBORS).
A Sunday? Sunday use to be a day of rest. People acknowledged Neighbors, families gathered and helped one another, there was more personal contact. I would like to see this return. Also, having Neighbor Day on a Sunday does away with the holiday being a paid holiday. It is a day of reflection. Let us introduce ourselves to our Neighbors in person or by E-Mail, Fax, phone etc. Love of our Neighbor should come from the heart and involve all creeds, color and places of origin. It should not be connected with a business.
Our heart (LOVE) does not single out good or
bad, it is for all!
Man. Women. Child.
"Love Thy Neighbor As Thyself "
Peace,
Respect, Justice, Equality Unity comes through.....................
LOVE!
